  • High-quality #2 pencils.

  • The Herb Pack contains 8 Sprout varieties: basil, cilantro, dill, mint, parsley, rosemary, sage, and thyme.

  • Sustainably harvested cedar wood body.

  • Sprout is a pencil that grows. When Sprout is too short to use as a pencil, plant Sprout to grow herbs.

  • Handmade in Minnesota, USA.

Most pencils, once sharpened down to a stub, serve no further use. At Sprout World, we have created a solution to combat this waste. A pencil with a water activated seed capsule, Sprout can be planted when it becomes too short to use. What was once a writing utensil soon grows into an herb.

How to Plant: Press the green end into the soil, covering only the capsule. Ensure that you plant Sprout in a location where it will receive plenty of sunlight.
Water your Sprout in order to activate the seed capsule and begin the seed's germination. Continue to water every day so that the soil stays moist.
If there is still a pencil stub leftover, it can be used as a helpful plant label or it can be removed.
Further Recommendation: We have planted hundreds of Sprout Pencils and found that they usually germinate in about two weeks. We encourage storing Sprout in a cool, dry place until planting time. For best results, plant Sprout by its first birthday and follow gardening best practices.

Pencil Becomes Plant

Make sprouting pots of newspaper

This is what you need:
  • Newspapers
  • An empty bottle
  • Sowing – and prick-out soil

Tear off a piece of paper aprox 12-15 cm wide down the newspaper side. Place the bottle aprox 3 cm from the edge of the paper and roll it tight around the bottle. Seal it thoroughly. Fold the bottom as if closing a packet and pack the bottom hard to keep the shape. Plant your Sprout in the pot, water thoroughly, and make sure to leave it in direct sun giving it lots of love and water regularly.

At Sprout we wanted to face the whole throw-away culture, starting with the most basic of our everyday utensils: What if instead of throwing your pencil stubs away you could plant them and have them grow into something delicious, beautiful, and fun?

We asked ourselves this question, gave it a shot and Sprout was born.

We’re really happy to present the world’s first pencil that grows!

Sprout comes in 13 different plants:

          My Sprout Pencil contains Marigold

Marigold is named after the Virgin Mary. This beautiful flower loves to add color to your flower bed, even if it is small.

The Marigold is part of the great Calendula family, with its mix of yellow and red colors.

The leaves golden-red color can also be used to dye materials such as wool or silk – and finally the fragrance can be used in creams and perfumes.

I was excited to get to try the Sprout Pencil! I love everything about this pencil.  I like that it starts as a useful pencil and ends up being a live plant that gives more seeds to plant again in Spring.  I think it is a wonderful way to introduce and engage children in the environment, recycling and reusing.

I will be updating as my pencil sprouts and grows.  I think this sprouting pencil would make a great gift for anyone who likes to get their hands dirty and garden, as well as the Eco Friendly and Recycling friends in your life.  I recommend it.
