Where would you go with your free plane ticket to anywhere in the US? #OlympusTakesYouThere #ad  OLYMPUS

I would fly from Ohio to Silver Peak Nevada where my Mom lives and spend time hiking in the mountains on a photography excursion with her.

When planning a photography excursion, vacation or casual travel, I like to choose naturally beautiful destinations.  I prepare by choosing picturesque places that I want to see in person and photograph.

I also think it's a great idea to learn tips and techniques from an online, weekend or weeklong photography workshop. This can really inspire you to try new techniques and get you to step out of the box and exploreI get inspired by simple natural events like the sunrise, fog lifting in the early morning and even cows grazing in an open field.

I prefer to travel on far away adventures but when time or finances don't allow, I am just as happy to go on a photo adventure near home.

I make sure to keep these things in mind before I travel:

  •  Equipment. camera, lenses, tripod, lighting, batteries/chargers, rain gear and several memory cards.
  •  Natural lighting. I like to start early to beat the crowds if I am going somewhere touristy so I can get where I need to be for the best shot and make use of  the golden hours one hour after sunrise or one hour before sunset.
  • The Rule of ThirdsThe rule of thirds is very important in keeping photography interesting and eye catching, by dividing an image using two horizontal lines and two vertical lines. I love to use lines to take the eye deep into my shot. Keep in mind, wide aperture (the variable opening by which light enters a camera) creates shallow depth of field and blurred backgrounds, while closed aperture lengthens depth of field and keeps backgrounds in focus.
